A recent computer operates at 3Ghz compared to the brain which operates around 100Hz : 30 million times slower. On the other hand, the brain is strongly parallel. A man is able to see a very complex image in 100ms, just 10 steps of the clock (equivalent to 10 instructions for a computer).
Computer has to execute a million instructions only to read a high resolution image. To decipher meaning in 3D it takes significantly more time.
Machine chips can execute a nanosecond instruction while neurons are millions of times slower.
However, brain compensates this disadvantage, because all the neurons and synapse are active simultaneously, while the cpu only have a few dozen processors (cores).
Even if processor has switching speed million times higher, brain remains 100 000 times faster.
The brain is very resilient and a processor is not at all. A single damaged transistor in a processor and it becomes unusable forever. On the other hand, brain can undergo the destruction of a significant number of nervous cells and continue to function.
Brain consumes a bit less energy than recent processor (30W vs 50W). On the other hand, it does not heat up and energy is used electrically, whereas in a processor, majority of energy goes into heat requiring expensive cooling.
Brain is conscious and can learn. Processor is clearly behind on this point.
Unification of balance pipelines : parallel use of all organic sensors. Brain has to control every cell in the human body.
Each cell has its own energy, and its own mechanisms. Each cell is serving the body, it waits for a signal orchestrated by the brain.
Neuron cells come in many types and forms : polymorphism
Machine (microprocessors)
Transistors : 10 billion
Operations per second: 10 000 billion
Human brain (Nervous system)
Neurons : 100 billion
Connection between each neuron : between 2000 and 10000
Signals per second : 10 000 000 billion
Axons (connections between neurons) : 100 000 billion
Communication speed of nerve fibers (Axons) : 120 m / s
